SELECTION BASIS

Specify the gate valve from the isolation duty.

A gate valve is normally selected for an open or closed position. Define the service conditions first, then choose the pressure system, end connection, construction materials and nominal size.

Isolation duty

Use a gate valve where the normal operating position is fully open or fully closed. For deliberate throttling, start with a globe valve instead.

Pressure and temperature

State design and operating pressure and temperature. The class or PN designation alone does not define the allowable pressure for every material.

Ends and dimensions

Select NPT, socket-weld, butt-weld or a flanged end to suit the piping specification. Confirm end-to-end and mating dimensions before fabrication.

Body and trim

Select the body grade for temperature, corrosion and project requirements. Check stem, wedge and seating materials separately as part of the trim.
