The seat angle changes the flow path
A T-pattern globe body places the seat approximately across the main run. Flow turns through the body to pass the seat and turns again toward the outlet. The stem is normally perpendicular to the pipe axis.
A Y-pattern tilts the seat and stem relative to the pipe axis. This creates a straighter internal route through the seating region. The exact angle, port shape and bore are manufacturer design data and should be taken from the approved drawing.

Do not select from pattern name alone
Y-pattern geometry often reduces pressure loss compared with a comparable T-pattern valve, but pattern names do not provide a flow coefficient. Seat diameter, disc profile, lift, port area and body transitions determine the actual value.
For throttling duty, provide normal, minimum and maximum flow with inlet and outlet conditions. Request the manufacturer’s flow coefficient, opening characteristic, predicted operating position, velocity review and noise or cavitation assessment where relevant. A catalogue silhouette cannot answer those questions.
Flow direction affects operation
Globe valves normally have a preferred flow direction set by the design. Flow under the disc and flow over the disc create different forces on the stem, disc and seat. Closing torque, packing exposure, fail action and shut-off behaviour can change.
Follow the body arrow and approved datasheet. If the process requires reverse flow, bidirectional shut-off or a specific fail position, state it in the RFQ. Do not reverse a valve in the line solely to change actuator thrust without manufacturer approval.
The Y-pattern envelope needs a drawing check
An inclined stem can reduce vertical height but move the handwheel, gland and removal path sideways. Nearby piping, insulation, platforms and structural steel may interfere even when a T-pattern valve fits the same face-to-face space.
Request end-to-end, open height, centreline-to-handwheel dimensions and the required withdrawal space for stem and internals. For an actuator, include mass, centre of gravity, support and orientation limits.
Data required for pattern selection
For shut-off duty, state differential pressure at closure, permitted leakage, operating frequency and flow direction. For throttling, add the complete flow cases and fluid state. Steam, flashing liquid, gas and two-phase service cannot be compared using nominal line size alone.
FerraForge publishes separate bolted-bonnet T-pattern and Y-pattern globe profiles. The selected route must retain its pattern identity through the RFQ, quotation, datasheet and product code.
Specification checks
- Write T-pattern or Y-pattern in the valve description.
- Provide preferred and possible reverse-flow conditions.
- For throttling, provide all flow cases and request flow-performance data.
- Approve end-to-end, open height, handwheel position and maintenance clearance.
- State shut-off differential pressure, leakage requirement and operating frequency.
