Functional comparison
NPT joins the valve and pipe through tapered threads. Socket-weld pipe enters a machined socket and is joined by a fillet weld. Butt-weld ends align the valve end and pipe bore for a circumferential groove weld.
The piping specification should decide which joint is permitted for the service. Pressure class alone does not choose the interface. Plant practice may restrict threaded joints, socket welds or crevices based on leakage risk, cyclic duty, corrosion, cleanability and examination access.

NPT: state the thread designation
ASME B1.20.1 covers dimensions and gauging for NPT and related inch pipe threads. NPT is not BSPT, NPSC or a metric thread. A male and female connection must share the specified thread form and size.
Thread sealant or tape must be compatible with the fluid, temperature and site procedure. Engagement, orientation and torque need control because forcing an extra turn can damage the valve end. Projects may prohibit threaded pressure joints in hazardous, cyclic or severe services.
Socket weld: include the joint procedure
A socket-weld joint needs the correct pipe insertion and installation gap before welding. The welder, procedure, filler, preheat, interpass and post-weld requirements come from the governing piping code and project specification. ASME B16.11 is the common dimensional standard for matching forged socket-weld fittings; the valve-end basis must also agree with the valve product standard and approved drawing.
The annular crevice in a socket-weld joint must be reviewed for corrosive, hygienic or solids-bearing service. Vibration and thermal cycling also require the weld detail and applicable piping-code fatigue requirements to be checked.
Butt weld: pipe wall and bore are purchase data
ASME B16.25 covers preparation of buttwelding ends, including bevels and shaping of heavy-wall components. A request for “BW ends” still lacks the mating pipe schedule or wall thickness. Without it, the supplier cannot fix the bore transition and final end preparation.
State whether a transition piece, pup piece or special internal taper is required. Define weld examination, hardness, heat treatment and material-verification requirements before the valve is manufactured. These can affect end geometry and production sequence.
Use a piping-class decision, not a catalogue default
NPT can simplify assembly where threaded joints are permitted. Socket weld is compact and avoids a threaded pressure joint. Butt weld provides a continuous welded connection with accessible examination methods defined by the project. Each option carries different installation and maintenance work.
For a replacement valve, record the existing end preparation, centreline, end-to-end and available weld access. An end change usually needs a piping modification and cannot be approved by matching NPS and Class alone.
Specification checks
- Use NPT, SW or BW explicitly and name the governing interface standard.
- For NPT, state ASME B1.20.1 and do not mix it with BSP threads.
- For SW, provide the piping joint and welding requirements.
- For BW, provide pipe OD, schedule or wall, bore and ASME B16.25 end preparation.
- Include NDE, PWHT, hardness and PMI requirements before manufacture where applicable.
