What the F and L identify
The prefix F identifies a forging grade in ASTM A182/A182M. F316 and F316L belong to the molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless family, but the L grade has a lower carbon limit. That distinction is relevant where fabrication or service can expose the material to temperatures at which chromium carbides may form at grain boundaries.
The designation applies to the certified component. A body ordered as F316L does not make the bonnet, stem, disc, ball, seats, bolting or weld deposit F316L. Each controlled part needs its own material line on the datasheet or bill of materials.

Welding changes the material discussion
A butt-weld end, welded bonnet or attachment weld introduces a heat-affected zone. The welding procedure, filler metal, heat input, interpass control, post-weld treatment if any, pickling and passivation requirements then sit alongside the base-metal grade.
F316L is often selected to reduce sensitisation risk after welding, but the L suffix does not validate a welding procedure or the final corrosion performance. Service chemistry, temperature, surface condition and fabrication quality remain part of the review.
Dual certification must be visible in the test results
A heat may satisfy multiple grades when its chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment and applicable requirements meet each stated grade. The certificate must show that basis. “316/316L” on a quotation without the material test results is not dual certification.
If the design calculation relies on F316 strength while the project asks for low-carbon chemistry, state both requirements before manufacture. Do not assume a dual-certified material retains every allowable stress or rating assigned to either grade under every code edition.
316 is not a universal corrosion class
The presence of molybdenum improves resistance in some environments compared with non-molybdenum austenitic grades. It does not make F316 or F316L immune to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion, stress-corrosion cracking or attack by every chemical mixture.
Provide fluid composition, concentration, contaminants, temperature, phase, cleaning chemicals and shutdown conditions. For seawater, high chlorides, sour environments or aggressive acids, a higher-alloy material may be required. That decision belongs to the project materials engineer.
Specify the complete valve construction
A stainless body paired with unsuitable packing, seat, gasket or bolting can fail the intended service. For a globe or gate valve, list stem and seating surfaces. For a ball valve, list ball, stem and soft or metal seat materials. Include galvanic and galling considerations where stainless parts run against one another.
Pressure-temperature limits come from the complete construction and the governing design standard. Copying the body grade onto every component line is not a material review.
Specification checks
- Write ASTM A182/A182M F316 or F316L and the required edition.
- State whether dual certification is acceptable and which grade controls design strength.
- List body, bonnet, closure member, stem, seats, packing, gasket and bolting separately.
- Specify welding, surface-treatment and independent material-verification requirements before order.
- Provide service chemistry and temperature instead of relying on the word “stainless”.
